The Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC) is an annual event that has been held by the UNPAR Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program since 2019. Since its inception, CTMC has become a platform for high school students from all over Indonesia to sharpen their curiosity and critical thinking skills through unique mathematical challenges. Initially held offline, the competition transformed into an online format since the COVID-19 pandemic to broaden the reach of participants, without diminishing their spirit and enthusiasm. CTMC itself is an international program originating from Canada, and has been run by The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo, Canada, since 2012 in various schools in Canada and several other countries around the world.
In 2025, CTMC is once again being held by the Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program. Here are the detailed information for CTMC 2025:

A. Explanation of CTMC
What is CTMC?
CTMC is an international mathematics contest designed by The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Each year, the CTMC event begins in Canada in April. It is then held in several other countries, including Indonesia. CEMC will hold the CTMC in Canada on April 8-9, 2025. This year, CTMC 2025 in Indonesia, facilitated by the UNPAR Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program, will be held on May 24, 2025.
FAQ
- Where can I find sample questions from previous years?
For sample questions, you can click here. - Are the questions in English?
Yes, all questions in every round are in English. You may use a non-electronic dictionary. - Besides a non-electronic dictionary, what else is allowed during CTMC?
Each participant may use a scientific calculator for the Individual and Relay Rounds. Calculators are not permitted during the Team Round. An explanation of the three rounds can be found in Section B regarding the Competition Format.
CTMC Participants
CTMC is a team-based competition for high school students, with 6 members per team. A team can be a mix of students from grades 10, 11, or 12. Team members from grade 9 are also allowed, but it is recommended to have at least one senior student. Every member must be present on the competition day to have a chance of winning.
FAQ
- Can participants be from different schools?
At UNPAR, all participants can be from the same school or a combination of different schools. Teams can choose their own name, provided it is appropriate. The school address can be filled in with the names of each participant’s school. - Can one school send more than one team?
Yes, each school can send more than one team. At UNPAR, there is no limit to the number of teams a single school can register. The supervising teacher may be the same for multiple teams.
B. Competition Format
Individual Round
- Each participant works individually.
- There are 10 short-answer questions.
- Calculators are permitted.
- Duration: 45 minutes.
Team Round
- All members of the same team can collaborate and strategize.
- There are 25 short-answer questions.
- Calculators are not permitted.
- Duration: 45 minutes.
Relay Round
- Each team is divided into two small groups of 3 people each, denoted as 1a, 1b, 1c, and 2a, 2b, 2c.
- Participants work separately. The answer from participant ‘a’ becomes the basis for participant ‘b’ to answer their question. Similarly, the answer from ‘b’ is needed by ‘c’ to answer theirs. Participant ‘c’ will write the final answer on the sheet provided by the committee.
- The flow of answers is only from ‘a’ to ‘b’ to ‘c’, not the other way around.

- Participants a, b, and c can work on their respective questions simultaneously. However, ‘b’ needs the answer from ‘a’, and ‘c’ needs the answer from ‘b’.
- Participants 1a, 1b, 2a, or 2b can correct their answers and pass them to the next person, as long as time permits.
- The time available is 8 minutes per relay.
- Calculators are permitted.
- In each relay, during the first 4 minutes, participants 1c and 2c are advised to fill in their answers in the “early answer” column, which has the potential for maximum points, but it can be left blank (The committee will mark the blank answer).
- In the second 4 minutes, participants 1c and 2c are only allowed to fill in their answers in the “final answer” column.
- There are three sets of questions (relays), each with the same rules.
- Relay round answer sheet template provided only to participants 1c and 2c:

C. Scoring
Points for each correct answer are as follows:
- Individual Round: 1 point per question per student.
- Team Round: 3 points per question.
- Relay Round: 10 points maximum per relay.
For the Relay Round, points are awarded only for the answers of participants 1c and 2c.
- A correct answer in the “early answer” column will receive the maximum of 10 points, provided an incorrect answer is not given in the “final answer” column.
- A correct answer in the “early answer” column followed by an incorrect answer in the “final answer” column will be considered wrong, receiving 0 points.
- A correct answer in the “final answer” column only will receive 5 points.
- The assessment diagram is as follows:

- The maximum team scores for each round are as follows:
- Individual Round: 60 points.
- Team Round: 75 points.
- Relay Round: 60 points.
- Each team will receive a bonus of 5 points.
- The maximum score for any team is 200 points.
- Each team will receive a bonus score of 5 points.
- The maximum score for each team is 200 points.
- Scoring will be conducted by the committee and evaluated by the UNPAR Lecturer Jury Team.
- The results for Top Team and Top Individual at the UNPAR Contest Center will be announced at the end of the event.
Scoring will be conducted by the committee and evaluated by a Jury Team of UNPAR Lecturers. The Top Team and Top Individual results at the UNPAR Contest Center will be announced at the end of the event.
