UNPAR Mathematics Study Program Secures 2nd Place in the 2025 National BPJS Kesehatan Actuarial Modeling Competition

Proud news has once again arrived from the students of the UNPAR Mathematics Study Program. In the prestigious 2025 Actuarial Modeling Competition for Health Social Security, organized for the first time by BPJS Kesehatan, the UNPAR representative team successfully clinched the 2nd Place National title in the Undergraduate (S1) category.

This competition carried the theme “Developing Actuarial Models to Enhance the Financial Resilience of Health Social Security.” BPJS Kesehatan recognizes the vital role of academic involvement in addressing the sustainability challenges of the National Health Insurance (JKN) program, particularly amidst demographic transitions and rising healthcare costs. The event saw participation from 47 teams from various universities across Indonesia. Following a rigorous initial selection process, 10 finalist teams were chosen as they are comprising 5 teams from the S1 level, 3 from S2, and 2 from S3 and were invited to present their ideas at the BPJS Kesehatan Head Office in Jakarta.

The UNPAR student team, consisting of Timothy Edsel Judika, Graciela Tiffany Tan, and Nara Rubylint Suyanto, presented a project titled “JKN Pension Calculator for Simulating Health Insurance Premium Preparation during Retirement.” This work was motivated by the high rate of premium arrears among the productive age group and a lack of financial planning for paying BPJS premiums upon entering retirement. In addition to the conceptual model, the team designed a calculator interface to help the public independently simulate and manage their required savings plans.

The Grand Final was held in person at the BPJS Kesehatan Building in Jakarta from December 15–17, 2025. The UNPAR team was the second to present on the first day, competing against other formidable finalists from Universitas Indonesia (2 teams), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and the Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK). The finalists were evaluated by an expert panel of judges, namely:

  1. Dumaria Rulina Tampubolon, Ph.D. (ITB),
  2. R. Mohamad Atok, Ph.D. (ITS),
  3. Prof. Dr. Gunardi (UGM), and
  4. Rizka Achiriah, M.M., ASAI (Society of Actuaries of Indonesia).

During the Q&A session, the team received valuable feedback regarding their model development from the judges as well as from Mr. Benjamin Saut Parulian Simanjuntak, the Assistant Deputy for Actuarial Affairs at BPJS Kesehatan.

This achievement was made possible through the intensive guidance of Farah Kristiani, Ph.D. and Mr. Robyn Irawan, M.Sc. During the competition in Jakarta, the team was accompanied directly by Mr. Robyn Irawan. Furthermore, Jonathan Hoseana, Ph.D., as the Head of the UNPAR Mathematics Study Program, provided full support throughout the preparation of materials, administrative processes, and the team’s departure. The official winners’ announcement on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, confirmed the UNPAR team as the National 2nd Place winners. This success is expected to serve as motivation for other students to continue innovating and contributing to solving real-world problems through the fields of mathematics and actuarial science. The Study Program extends its heartiest congratulations to Timothy, Graciela, and Nara, and looks forward to their future achievements.
