Community service activities at the Center for Mathematics and Society consist of:
- direct services to the community,
- application of science and technology in the field of mathematics,
- capacity building of the community, and
- community empowerment.
These activities can be grouped into the following three categories.
1. Teaching Programme in 3T Areas
This is a 9-credit elective course in the Undergraduate Mathematics Program, first conducted in the short semester of 2021–2022. Students enrolled in this course are placed for 8–10 weeks in 3T areas (Frontier, Remote, and Disadvantaged) as teachers at partner elementary/junior/senior high schools and actively involved in partner community/organization activities to support local development, especially those related to literacy. During this period, students step out of their comfort zones to experience life in the 3T areas and actively contribute to community development.
2. Enhancement of Teachers’ Competencies
Several community service activities at the Center for Mathematics and Society focus on improving the competencies of junior and senior high school mathematics teachers. Activities that have been conducted or are ongoing include mentoring teachers at Santa Angela Junior and Senior High Schools in Bandung under the Widya Bhakti Foundation in mathematical writing, the use of software tools in learning, mathematical problem-solving strategies, and the preparation of mathematics questions based on Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS); as well as the development of an actuarial concentration curriculum for Kalam Kudus Senior High School in Bandung under the Kalam Kudus Indonesia Foundation, aimed at providing early preparation for students interested in studying actuarial science at the university level.
3. Enrichment of Students’ Knowledge
Other community service activities focus on enriching the perspectives and increasing the interest of junior and senior high school students in mathematics. Activities that have been conducted or are ongoing include seminars to enhance students’ interest in learning mathematics for Trinitas Senior High School students in Bandung, an introduction to actuarial science at Talenta Senior High School in Bandung, and mathematics competitions for junior and senior high school students such as the UNPAR Mathematics Competition (KOMAT) and the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC).
